7/365 - A Swish of Water
I have this problematic bathtub drain. It doesn’t take much to clog it. Maybe the pipe is too narrow for the volume of water. Or maybe it angles like an elbow where it should go straight. In any event, to keep it open and flowing freely, I flush the drain regularly with clean water to chase away the shampoo and soap bubbles before they build up and cause problems. It seems to do the trick.
It got me thinking… If this technique works for pipes, might it be a good practice for my body too? I figured a little more water in my day couldn’t hurt, and so two years ago, a new daily habit was born. Every morning I drink a 12 oz glass of water to begin my day, before coffee or breakfast or anything else. I read somewhere that water helps flush out toxins that may settle during sleep.
Sometimes I squeeze in the citrusy juice of a half lemon and it tastes like a dose of sunshine in a glass. It’s an instant mood lifter, and an intentional way to signal the start of my day.
When completed as a daily ritual, it becomes a mindfulness practice that comes with the reward of wellbeing. One glass of water to keep things running smoothly, and my body smiles inwardly. Swish!
